The Shenandoah Valley Music Festival Guild will hold its monthly luncheon on Thursday, April 18, 2019, at the Box Office Brewery in Strasburg. Gathering time is 11:30 am. Lunch is at 12:15 pm. The cost is $21.

Menu items include a choice 1) Two Smoked Turkey Sliders, served with housemade cranberry alioli, coleslaw and apple cider vinegar; or 2) Pulled Pork Sandwich served on a toasted bun, inhouse smoked pulled pork with a choice of sauces, and coleslaw. Each choice comes with Box Office Green Beans. Beveridge includes tea, coffee and water.

A Cash Bar of Box Office mini brews and Virginia wines is available.

Entertainment will be by the Shenandoah Valley Chapter of Sweet Adelines International. Chartered in 1983, the twenty women come from throughout the Valley and from all walks of life. They are directed by Con Burch, a local singer, songwriter and teacher from Fort Valley. This is the second Music Guild appearance of the group, whose motto is “Harmonizing the World.”

The Box Office Brewery is located in one of the most historic properties in the Valley. The old Strand Theatre of Strasburg is believed to be the first movie house in the area. Constructed c. 1918, it has hosted traveling vaudeville acts, silent movies and later, “talkies”. The name was changed in the 1930’s to the Strasburg Theatre. It was known in town as “the gathering place”.

In 2016 the property was purchased by Karl Raulston and Tom Price, who opened it as the Box Office Brewery. During the renovation, some of the real jewels of the site were discovered. On the side walls of the theatre are a series of landscape paintings, believed to be the oldest murals in Strasburg and Shenandoah County. The original pressed-tin ceiling has been preserved.

Of major interest to visitors is the series of 1933-34 Window Boards (movie advertisemen posters) which line the walls of the lobby. They feature such stars of the day as Will Rodgers, Charlie Chan, Ginger Rodgers and the “Duke” himself, John Wayne.

Tom Price, one of the owners, will give the Guild an historical overview of the property.

Located at 177 East King Street, Strasburg, the brewery is across from the Town Hall and next to the Fire Company. There is off-street and handicapped parking behind the brewery, with easy access to the building.
