Basye, Va. — The Shenandoah Valley Music Festival Guild, the fundraising arm of SVMF, held its Annual Member Appreciation Luncheon at Bryce Resort on Dec. 12 to honor members for their yearlong efforts to raise money for the nonprofit concert series held each summer at Shrine Mont in Orkney Springs.

Guild President David Collins presented an $20,000 check to SVMF Board Chairwoman Leigh Devier at the luncheon. It was the largest donation made to the Festival since the Guild was formed in 1992.

“This a remarkable group of people,” said Dennis Lynch, president and executive director of Shenandoah Valley Music Festival. “We appreciate the work they do and the fun they have raising money for the Music Festival.”

The Guild raises money for the Shenandoah Valley Music Festival through fees for monthly luncheons, raffle drawings, dinner theater outings and other special events scheduled throughout the year. The Guild also raises money through its ice cream sales at the Festival’s concerts and its Annual Holiday Bake Sale Auction, where participants make generous bids on cakes, cookies, pies, pastries and various gift items.

Funkhouser is a fixture on the Shenandoah Valley music scene and performs regularly at numerous festivals and venues throughout the region. He has opened for and shared stages with many acts, including award-winning country singer-songwriter Phil Vassar and Jounce, a post-punk rock band fronted by actor Danny Tamberelli, best known for his roles in children’s shows “The Adventures of Pete and Pete” “The Magic School Bus,” and Nickelodeon’s “All That,” among others. Funkhouser has also toured throughout Virginia, Washington, D.C., eastern Tennessee, North Carolina, South Carolina, Philadelphia and New York City.

Building a reputation for beautiful songs in the Americana tradition, Funkhouser is rapidly expanding his audience while developing his collection of original songs. His fourth release “Shooting A Horse” (2018), is observant, romantic, and at times political, delivered in a style that showcases his multi-instrumental talent.

The Shenandoah Valley Music Festival Guild will hold its monthly luncheon on Thursday, April 18, 2019, at the Box Office Brewery in Strasburg. Gathering time is 11:30 am. Lunch is at 12:15 pm. The cost is $21.

Menu items include a choice 1) Two Smoked Turkey Sliders, served with housemade cranberry alioli, coleslaw and apple cider vinegar; or 2) Pulled Pork Sandwich served on a toasted bun, inhouse smoked pulled pork with a choice of sauces, and coleslaw. Each choice comes with Box Office Green Beans. Beveridge includes tea, coffee and water.

A Cash Bar of Box Office mini brews and Virginia wines is available.

Entertainment will be by the Shenandoah Valley Chapter of Sweet Adelines International. Chartered in 1983, the twenty women come from throughout the Valley and from all walks of life. They are directed by Con Burch, a local singer, songwriter and teacher from Fort Valley. This is the second Music Guild appearance of the group, whose motto is “Harmonizing the World.”

The Box Office Brewery is located in one of the most historic properties in the Valley. The old Strand Theatre of Strasburg is believed to be the first movie house in the area. Constructed c. 1918, it has hosted traveling vaudeville acts, silent movies and later, “talkies”. The name was changed in the 1930’s to the Strasburg Theatre. It was known in town as “the gathering place”.

In 2016 the property was purchased by Karl Raulston and Tom Price, who opened it as the Box Office Brewery. During the renovation, some of the real jewels of the site were discovered. On the side walls of the theatre are a series of landscape paintings, believed to be the oldest murals in Strasburg and Shenandoah County. The original pressed-tin ceiling has been preserved.

Of major interest to visitors is the series of 1933-34 Window Boards (movie advertisemen posters) which line the walls of the lobby. They feature such stars of the day as Will Rodgers, Charlie Chan, Ginger Rodgers and the “Duke” himself, John Wayne.

Tom Price, one of the owners, will give the Guild an historical overview of the property.

For reservations and information about the Music Guild, please call Sandy Pruett at 540-459-2314 or email her at kepruett@shentel.net. Reservations should be made by Monday, April 15th. Remember, if you have not received a confirmation from Sandy, you do not have a reservation.

Located at 177 East King Street, Strasburg, the brewery is across from the Town Hall and next to the Fire Company. There is off-street and handicapped parking behind the brewery, with easy access to the building.

The Shenandoah Valley Music Festival Guild will hold an autumn luncheon on Thursday, Sept. 19 at The Winery at Kindred Pointe. The after-lunch entertainment will be by the Shenandoah Valley Ukulele Players. Arrival time for wine tasting and conversation is 11:30 a.m. Lunch is served at 12:15 p.m. Cost is $21. The public is cordially invited

The buffet luncheon will be served by Shaffer’s Catering. It will include parmesan crusted chicken, with lemon and garlic orzo; broccoli salad with cashews served on the side; roasted green beans and assorted hard French rolls and butter. Dessert will be fresh sliced strawberries, cascaded over house-baked pound cake and whipped topping. Beverages are coffee and sweet and unsweetened tea.

A Cash Wine Bar will also be available.

Back by popular demand for a third Music Guild appearance is the Shenandoah Valley Ukulele Prayers, a group of “young retirees,” who enjoy strumming together. Talented and energetic, the group promises to provide an enjoyable afternoon of old favorites.

A Tip Basket will be available to show our appreciation, since the Music Guild does not pay its entertainers.

The Winery at Kindred Pointe is located at 3575 Conicville Rd., Mt. Jackson. Owners Bruce and Amy Helsley purchased the 58 acre property in 2005 as a stable and future vineyard. The name “Kindred Pointe” is taken from Amy’s favorite novel, “Anne of Green Gables.” Their first vintage is from their 2012 harvest.

For reservations and information about the Music Guild, please contact Sandy Pruett on 540-459-2314 or email her at kepruett@shentel.net.
